And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord. – Luke 1:45
This is what the bible says about Mary, the mother of Jesus. When Mary was visited by Gabriel and was told that she, a young virgin, will conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God, she believed his words and submitted herself to the sovereign will of God. Mary believed the promise of God and that the promise will be fulfilled at the appointed time and about this, the bible calls her blessed. And this is one of the many wonderful truths the bible declares about women: God makes promises to women and not only men and that God blesses women who walk by faith and know that the Lord is faithful and all powerful.
Woman is a glorious creation of God, created in His image and given gifts and responsibilities through which she is to help mankind and glorify the name of Jesus. But the world is out to cripple and destroy us. Women in some cultures are oppressed and treated with far less dignity than men. Women in the west are often sexually objectified, exploited and increasingly, there is a cultural war to strip women of their femininity, blurring the gender distinctions. The consequence is that women cannot be appreciated and cherished for being women.
Women are constantly being tempted to put their trust in their appearances, in their social statuses, in their education, in their jobs or careers or in men. All these are fleeting foundations. Women are encouraged to place their trust in anything and anyone but God. She is told she carries it all on her shoulders and in this, she is tempted to fear.
But godly women are called to be fearless women:
…and you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. – 1 Peter 3:6
‘Her’ in this verse is Sarah, the wife of Abraham. The Apostle Peter is describing what a woman, who is a descendant of Abraham and Sarah by faith and according to the promise of God, is ought to be like. She is to be a fearless woman. We are not told that a Christian woman will not face anything dangerous or fearful for indeed, she will but we are told that she herself is able stand firm and fearless despite her circumstances. And it is clear she does not do this by her own strength or by hope in herself or her own abilities but rather, she is able to not fear because she trusts in her God and Saviour.
A fearless woman is fearless because she knows of her new identify in Jesus Christ, she knows she is a new creation and that the old has passed and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17), she knows that she is a daughter of God (John 1:12), she knows that God is infinitely powerful (Revelation 1:8) and a faithful God (Lamentations 3:23), who gives good gifts to his children (Matthew 7:11).
The woman who believes in Jesus Christ her Lord and Saviour is not shaken, as her faith grows, so does her strength and beauty because she is guarded by the peace that is in Jesus Christ. She fears not.
Strength and dignity are her clothing and she laughs at the time to come.
